Creating cPanel full & partial backup for migration to another server

Making a website backup is a very important action to any webmaster, especially when you want to make major changes in your website.

The Backup utility tool compresses your files, database, forwarders, and filters into a compressed file that you can download into your computer or drive.

  • Experienced and higher-level users may prefer to use this interface for a more advanced backup processing approach.
  • Newer and less experienced users may opt to use the Backup Wizard interface.
  • The system stores backup files in .tar.gz format.

Backing up contents

If you want to back up your /home directory, the backup file will include all the files that you one, both accessible and inaccessible. To exclude specific files and directories from a backup, you must place a configuration file in the /home directory.

Creating and downloading a full website backup

  • Log in to your cPanel account and authenticate your login.
  • In the dashboard, go to the Files section and click Backup.
  • Click Download a Full Website Backup. This will let you create, download, and store a full backup file. After clicking, you will be sent to the next screen.

  • A full backup file is composed of your /home directory, files, databases, email forwarders, and filters.
  • You won’t be able to use a full backup file to restore your website using the cPanel interface.
  • Download and compress the backup file before attempting to restore it.
  • After decompressing the backup file, you can upload and restore individual parts of your website inside the full backup file.

Backups Available for Download

In this section, you can download a currently existing full backup file to your computer by clicking the filename of the backup file you want. The creation date of the backup file appears in its name, which starts with backup-mm-dd-yyyy.
